Abstract

Objective: To document the contribution of the recreational use of wild edible mushrooms as a local development strategy in Senguio, Michoacán.

Design, methodology and approximation: A simple case study was carried out from an inductive perspective, for the systematization of empirical evidence that contributes to the discussion of theoretical constructs about the productive restructuring of the forests located in rural areas.

Results: The biocultural heritage, contained in the micodiversity of Senguio Michoacán, expresses a co-evolutionary relationship between the human being and nature. This fact operates in terms of the interrelationships between knowledge, beliefs and practices. The fact that wild edible mushrooms constitute an endogenous resource that contributes to the material reproduction of the community, in a journey that ranges from food self-consumption to tourist activity, stands out.

Limitations and implications: The research only focuses on the perception of the inhabitants of the community that participate in mycological tourism, so the findings are limited to explaining the internal dynamics of a sector of the community, but it is not enough to explain another type of phenomena such as the markets of this tourist modality, the new social tensions around this resource or the sociocultural impacts derived from the new productive activity.

Findings and conclusions: It is concluded that the tourist dimension of wild edible mushrooms obeys to the social construction of new meanings, material and symbolic, of agri-food resources with a strong anchorage to local cultures and territory.
