BREADNUT (Brosimum alicastrum SWARTZ): AN ALTERNATIVE FOR FOOD SECURITY IN MÉXICO

Abstract

In the National Development Plan, food security is established as an important point; according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there is the commitment of eradicating hunger in every country of the world, and it is said that there is food security when all people have physical and economic access to sufficient innocuous and nutritional foods. In México the food and nutritional scenario has a great negative impact, as it is not possible to supply the domestic market of basic products like maize (Zea mays L.), something that is reflected by the high number of imports carried out. As an alternative to contribute to sources of protein for the diet, some favorable characteristics of breadnut (Brosimum alicastrum Swartz) are listed, which has good nutritional potential. This is a tree that is distributed throughout the northeast zone of the Mexican Republic and Central America, where it has been broadly studied because of its high nutritional value.
