Abstract

The agro-ecotourism potential of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, México, was evaluated based on the FAS model (Factors, Attractors, and Support Systems), which is a tool used for tourism analysis proposed by the World Tourism Organization. The strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats were evaluated; the evaluation of the attractors was according to the CICATUR-OEA methodology, and the study of the support systems was carried out with a market assessment. The results showed that there are strengths and opportunities to develop rural tourism, and that the tourism environment of the study region is favorable, since up to 11 tourism attractions were identified, of which four are considered of high
hierarchy within the methodology used. The market assessment allowed recognizing the meta market, to which the agro-ecotourism services and products related to mezcal could be offered, and to maguey cultivation and dry climate ecosystems
