Abstract

An information system called GAP was created to manage backing granted through a CONAFOR (Comisión Nacional
Forestal, National Forest Commission) program. This study is carried out to illustrate how some of its attributes could
increase the utility of a management system of government supports to producers. These characteristics include: the
applicants update and validate the data of their own applications; the rules established for the program are used to
calculate the amounts of backing; and all the activities related to the verification of actions are handled, including the
allocation of technicians that perform them. A priority of the system is to offer, through multiple queries and reports,
detailed and summarized information about the program to the public at large, organizations or institutions interested,
applicants themselves, and staff from the agency that operates the program. Other general attributes of the system are
the computational efficiency -vital for queries- but also the simplicity of operation, and the parameterization of certain
elements to facilitate its maintenance.
