Abstract

Objective: To determine the profitability of ten small-scale production pig farms and different production systems located in the municipality of Tarimoro, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Methodology: A questionnaire was applied to 10 pig meat producers from different communities of the municipality of Tarimoro Guanajuato. The information was captured using Excell, three matrices were created in a spreadsheet, following the methodology of the MAP. With these, the private budget was calculated and the private profitability of the companies was determined at current or market prices.
Results: Three production systems were identified in the study region: piglet production, combined system and complete cycle. The production costs oscillated between $ 23.89/kg and $42.04/kg pesos per kilogram of pig produced, being the highest in the piglet production farm and the lowest in one of the full-cycle farms. The profitability for the three production systems studied were: piglet (18%), combined piglet-fattening (10%) and complete cycle.
Implications of study: The results of this investigation are based solely on the capacity used of the facilities with bellies in production and are only valid for the ten farms considered in this study, of which six operated at their maximum installed capacity.
Findings: The results indicate that in Tarimoro, Guanajuato, production systems for breeding and sale of piglets, full-cycle, and breeding and fattening in that order were profitable and competitive activities for pig farmers.
