Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is currently the most productive agrifood crop in the world. Due to the chemical and biochemical nature of the raw material it produces, this crop presents great potential for productive diversification. This article presents the advancements regarding the generation of coproducts, byproducts and derivatives from sugarcane, and some opportunities and challenges to achieve efficient diversification of the sugar agroindustry in Mexico are analyzed.
