Abstract

Objective: This review offers a framework for understanding how electronic technologies impact agriculture. It is expected that this paper will serve as a starting point for debate on the pathways to be implemented to address forthcoming challenges.

Approach: The implementation of technological innovations and upcoming advances in agricultural pathways are highlighted, thus presenting a perspective on updated agricultural advances. Challenges faced by globally connected agriculture are discussed, particularly those related to technology adoption.

Results: In agricultural progress, electronics has led agriculture to transform from mechanization to data-guided Agriculture 4.0. To date, agriculture is starting to benefit from the so-called Agriculture 5.0, characterized by a hyper-connected environment, with electronic systems transforming food production, boosting efficiency, and addressing sustainability challenges.

Findings: Agriculture is a crucial human activity for daily life. Like many other human activities, agriculture has changed and been profoundly transformed by the integration of electronics and digital technologies.
