Abstract
Scientific literature was reviewed to determine the phytochemical compounds reported to positively affect ruminant reproduction and to review the concept of antioxidants and oxidative stress and how they affect ruminant reproduction. Research has shown that natural antioxidants found in certain plants contain various phytochemical compounds that strengthen the immune system. These compounds have antibacterial, antiseptic, tonic, and antioxidant properties that help reduce oxidative stress, improving outcomes during gestation and birth. Additionally, they enhance the vitality of the newborn. Although promising results exist, little research is done on some phytochemicals with antioxidant properties that might benefit ruminant reproduction. Therefore, phytochemicals with antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals, restoring balance to endocrine, metabolic, and immune systems and reducing oxidative stress on reproduction.
