Abstract

Objective: Determine the prevalence of mastitis and estimate the economic losses due to the disease in dual-purpose units in Cuajinicuilapa, Guerrero, Mexico.

Methodology: 261 cows were sampled, with a total of 1,025 quarters. For the diagnosis of mastitis, the California test (CMT) was used and the economic losses due to the disease were estimated by the loss of milk according to the degree of mastitis.

Results: The prevalence found was 42.9%, 40.2% for subclinical mastitis and 2.7% for clinical mastitis. Of the sampled quarters, 80% were negative, 17.5 % with subclinical mastitis, 0.7% with clinical mastitis and 1.8% with blind quarters. Economic losses associated with mastitis ranged from 0.248 to 1,253 USD per day.

Limitations/implications: The lack of records in the Livestock Production Units (UPP) studied did not allow the estimation of other costs associated with the presence of mastitis.

Conclusion: The prevalence of mastitis in dual-purpose UPPs in Cuajinicuilapa, Gro., was lower than other regions of the country. Subclinical mastitis occurred more frequently, which led to economic losses in all herds due to a decrease in income from milk sales. This loss is little perceived by the producer, because the presentation is subclinical.
