Abstract

Objective: analyze the variables and indicators of banana trade in the world market.


Design/methodology/approach: the competitiveness of Mexican bananas was analyzed for the period 1994-2021, by calculating the index of relative advantage of exports (VRE), the index of revealed comparative advantage (IVCR) and the normalized revealed comparative advantage (IVCRN).


Results: Mexico is among the main banana exporters worldwide, the main export destinations are the United States of America, which consumed 84% of the exports and Japan 15%; The revealed comparative advantage index with positive values ​​shows that banana exports produced in Mexico are competitive in the world market, bananas exported to the United States market are competitive and there is greater stability in this market, likewise Mexico is competitive in the Japanese market; The index of relative advantage of exports with values ​​greater than zero reaffirms Mexico's position as one of the main exporting countries with global competitiveness.


Limitations of the study/implications: the analysis of competitiveness was carried out based on the consultation of databases of international organizations, which contain information that presents delays of up to two or three years on exports and some data present important differences. .


Findings/conclusions: Mexico is competitive worldwide in banana exports, the IVCR and IVCRN indicate that the United States of America is the most competitive market, in addition to Japan, despite the fact that the volume of banana exports is lower.
